General
Time again for another trip to the Yorkshire Dales, and in the interests of not straying too far at this time of year from what passes as the main roads in the Dales, we will be returning to Ravenstonedale .. one of Westmorland’s most attractive small villages which is situated between Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh, only 10 minutes drive from Junction 38 on the M6.
On the last occasion we were in Ravenstondale we stayed in the Black Swan. This time I thought we would try the King's Head Hotel which is under new management and seems to be getting good reviews. At the moment there are only 4 rooms available in the hotel for this weekend, but as weekend numbers seem to be dropping I thought this would be sufficient, provided I get feedback quickly and get the booking finalised. If we do require additional accommodation there are rooms available in the Black Swan, which is also under new management and has been refurbished since our last visit. As the village is very small the two hotels are less than 10 minutes walk apart so any split will not cause problems.
Ravenstonedale is located at the foot of the Howgill Fells and one of the peaks lies just above the village, giving good walking very close by without the requirement to travel further afield. The Yorkshire Dales and Lake District are also just a short drive from the village. For those who may fancy a trip into one of the larger nearby towns in the event of poor weather or for a relaxing day, Kirkby Stephen is only a few minutes away and Sedbergh just a bit further.
Further details on the hotels can be found on their websites ... www.kings-head.com and www.blackswanhotel.com.
Travel
Travel will be by car pool as usual for these trips. Car sharing and any hill plans for the Friday can be discussed a few days beforehand. If you have any specific plans let me know via the acceptance form so that I can inform other members.
Transport costs will be covered by passengers coming to an arrangement with the driver .. if you’re prepared to drive, please let me know.
Activity Plans
At this stage no particular plans have been made as these will depend on a number of factors including experience of walkers, whether they have been to the area before, and weather conditions. However, due to their proximity, routes on the Howgill Fells will be one of the most likely choices. Further decisions on routes will be made nearer the time.
There will however, definitely be low level routes arranged for those who prefer this option which will be led by an experienced walker (map-reader!).
Accommodation
I've been in touch with the King's Head Hotel but can’t provisionally book rooms as they operate an online booking facility. However, 2 doubles and 2 twins are presently available and from previous experience they do not expect these rooms to be booked in the short term, but obviously I should confirm a booking as soon as possible.
The subsidised cost of the weekend at the King's Head for B&B will be £56 based on 2 people sharing a double or twin room. Rooms at the Black Swan will be slightly more expensive. Further details on the hotels can be found on their websites as noted above.
