Overseas Trips |
The Club has organised a number of overseas trips since budget flights were introduced.
We've visited a number of European mountain areas, with
varying styles and standards of accommodation,
and on each trip there are
usually some 3000m peaks available for climbing if weather permits.
We've also established a savings scheme called the 'ScottishPower Alpine Club' to ensure that funds
are available when costs
such as travel and accommodation have to be pre-paid.
1996 | 1997 | 1999 | 2001 | 2003 | 2005 | 2007 | 2009 | 2010
On May 29th 1996, a group of
10 Club members flew from Prestwick to Dublin courtesy of Ryanair and picked up
a self-drive 12-seater minibus at the airport.
The target was to climb all the
Republic of
Ireland's 3000ft peaks, then visit Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland's
highest peak, all within a week.
The group stayed in hostel accommodation of
varying standards and did their own catering for all meals.
The target was
achieved .. despite a setback due to bad weather .. and most kissed the famous
Blarney Stone en route!
In
August 1997, a group of 16 Club members flew to Munich in Germany, then caught a
train for Innsbruck in Austria.
Their
destination was the Stubai region south of Innsbruck, and a circular
high-level route of 12 days walking.
The tour was on a hut-to-hut basis, with
accommodation booked in advance in the mountain huts for each night.
The route
also offered the ascent of several 3000m peaks for those who wished to carry the
right equipment ..
but the normal walking route, although between 2000m and
2500m, needed no special gear.
The route was successfully completed and many of
the peaks climbed.
In
August 1999, a group of 15 again travelled to Innsbruck, but this time the
destination was the Zillertal region above Mayrhofen.
The route was again on a hut-to-hut basis, but went from end-to-end,
starting at the Italian border south of Innsbruck and finishing in Mayrhofen.
The weather was less kind than in the Stubai, and only two 3000m peaks
were climbed, but the route was enjoyed by all.
A group of 12 visited
the Picos de Europa in northern Spain in September 2001.
The area is quite similar to the island of Skye, with steep rocky
mountains very reminiscent of the Cuillin.
The Western and Central Massifs
were visited and one 2000m peak climbed called Jultayu.
A group of 15 visited the Bernese Oberland area of
Central Switzerland between 26 August and 4 September.
Many of the classic
routes were walked and many of the classic peaks were photographed!
A group of 10 visited the Val di Fassa area of the Dolomites in northern Italy
between 31 August and 10 September.
Again, many of the classic routes were
walked, and a number of peaks climbed.
A group of 10 again visited the Dolomites in northern
Italy, this time to the Brenta area, between 28 August and 7 September.
Many of the 'via ferrata' were followed and the tracks in the area explored.
A group of 10 visited the Gran Paradiso Alps in northern
Italy between 28 August and 8 September.
The major tracks in the area were
explored and a number of 3000m peaks climbed.
A group of 11 made a special trip to the Stubai Alps
south of Innsbruck in Austria between 25 August and 5 September,
following the Stubai Hohenweg visited in 1997, but in the reverse direction.
